Signs of a Settling Foundation

Monday, August 13th, 2012 by Jessie Schoepflin

There are a few tell-tale signs of foundation settling for you to look for.

First off is stair-step cracking of bricks. As your home settles and sinks the bricks may begin to pull away from one another in a stair-step pattern.

Next sign of settlement is a leaning chimney. As the foundation settles your chimney may begin to pull away from the rest of your home.

Third sign of foundation settlement can be seen when door or windows are no longer square. Doors or windows can begin to pull away from the framing leaving a gap between the brick or exterior. Cracking around doors and windows is also one of the first areas you will see evidence of settlement.
